Book Description

Navigating Generative AI in Teaching and Learning: A Practical Guide for Instructors was developed by the University of Iowa Center for Teaching to support instructors as they consider the growing presence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education.

GenAI has introduced new questions about student learning, course and assignment design, communication, academic integrity, and workforce preparation. Instructors are encountering these questions across a wide range of disciplines, teaching contexts, and perspectives. While some are exploring ways to incorporate GenAI into learning, others are identifying situations where students may need to work independently of GenAI or critically examine its role and impact. Many are navigating a combination of these approaches.

This handbook does not advocate for a single approach to GenAI. Instead, it encourages instructors to make intentional decisions that align with their learning goals, disciplinary context, and teaching values. Readers are invited to reflect on their own perspectives and experiences while exploring ideas and strategies related to student learning, assignment design, communication and transparency, and student motivation.

Because GenAI continues to shape teaching and learning in different ways, there are often more questions than answers. We hope this handbook provides a useful starting point for thinking through those questions while remaining focused on supporting student learning.
