28 RPD Delivery
Removable Partial Denture Delivery
Overview
Prior to the start of the delivery appointment, ensure that you have performed the 1st step of the Clinical Remount (mounting the maxillary cast using the Remount Index) to save yourself time!
Clinical Steps
1. PIP Paste
- Paint a thin layer onto the intaglio surface of the patient’s maxillary RPD + seat
- Use acrylic burs to adjust areas of show-through (high spots on the partial denture that will lead to sore spots)
- Continue adjusting until denture appears to have even contacts on the entirety of the intaglio surface
- Repeat on the mandibular denture!
Adjust areas of show-through (pink) with an acrylic bur

2. Clinical Remount
- Take a new Centric Relation record with the patient’s dentures in
- Use the previously-mounted maxillary remount cast and the new CR record to mount the lower denture on the articulator
- Adjust occlusion until contacts are even

3. Verify Occlusion & Retention Intraorally

4. Patient Education
- Sore spots are common!
- Similar to “breaking in a new pair of shoes”
- Advise the patient not to attempt self-adjustments of the denture –> schedule follow-up appointments instead
- Adaptation to a Denture
- Speaking and eating may be difficult at first but will improve with time
- Start with soft foods + chew evenly on both sides
- Cleaning & Maintenance
- Use a soft denture brush + non-abrasive cleanser to clean prostheses (avoid toothpaste)
- Leave partial dentures out at night + keep them in water or a denture solution
- Continue to clean natural teeth with toothbrush and toothpaste 2x/day
- Dentures should last for 5 – 7 years, but changes in fit are normal due to bone + soft tissue changes (may require relines or repairs)

Findings and Treatment:
Intaglio surfaces of upper and lower dentures were adjusted using PIP paste and acrylic burs. Patient said the denture felt comfortable with no rough or high spots. Clasps were adjusted with Bird Beak / 3-Prong Plier to increase retention.
Centric Relation record was taken using bite registration material for clinical remount. Occlusion was first adjusted on the articulator and then verified intraorally.
Denture was polished before patient was dismissed from the appointment.
Post-Op Instructions / Limitations: Patient was instructed that it is normal for dentures to cause sore spots initially, but these areas can be adjusted in future appointments. They were instructed to eat soft foods for the next day, emphasizing importance of trying to chew evenly on both sides. They were also instructed to remove dentures at night and soak in denture cleaner. Dispensed soft denture brush and case.
Evaluation: Patient was cooperative and tolerated treatment well.
