Getting Comfortable in the Classroom
Dear Professor,
You have more influence in your classroom than you may think. The first day of class can be a make-or-break moment for setting the tone of the entire semester. The initial introduction corresponds directly with our first impressions. The first day of class allows the professor the opportunity to be completely transparent with their students. This includes transparency for class expectations, course guidelines, encouraging the importance of open communication between instructors and students, as well as the importance of taking care of one’s mental health in the way one would care for their physical health. Open, honest communication demonstrates that you care about your students’ success in your class as well as their individual well-being.
Simply acknowledging that students have busy lives outside of school can go a long way. Sometimes we need to be acknowledged in a way that goes beyond ‘being a student.’ As students we have responsibilities outside of the classroom. Some students may work one or two jobs in addition to their academics, some students may be caregivers to loved ones. It is crucial to acknowledge and see your students as individuals who also have obligations beyond your class.
I truly believe by bridging the gap between students and professors will assist in the development of student advocacy.
Creating comfortable classrooms and lecture settings is essential in our learning. How can we properly learn if we are experiencing discomfort?
We invite you to reflect on your current class structure:
- What is an inclusive classroom? What does an inclusive classroom mean to you?
- What does an inclusive classroom look like for you and what you are teaching?
- “Getting comfortable in the classroom,” What does that mean to you? What do you think that looks like?
- What about the physical comfort in the classroom space? What about mental comfort in the classroom space?
- How do you, as a professor, instructor, or teaching assistant, establish a safe space?
- What is something every student can benefit from?
