18 Learning Reflection-Active Listening

For this assignment, I used my active listening skills when having conversations with my roommate, Kelli. We talked about a few different topics over the 36 hours such as when we would get dinner, how her class work is going and some funny stories from the weekend. Kelli did not have much of a reaction to me intentionally trying to practice active listening, because I tend to be a particularly good listener already. I know how it feels to not think someone is not listening or absorbing what I am saying, so I would never want to make her feel that way. Kelli did notice I was making more eye contact than usual, and I stopped what I was doing to give her my full undivided attention instead of multi-tasking. I did have some challenges while trying to actively listen to Kelli because I had to consciously not let my mind wander. I had to make sure I was strictly thinking about what Kelli was saying and not make any connections to something else in my head.
