27 Creative Project 3

Step 1 – Explanation Context: Have you done collage before this? When and for what purpose?

I have done a collage like this before in high school and it was for art class. I have created this collage to illustrate Parkinson disease because that is what he suffered from. When looking at the details this collage shows various phases of his life. It captures moments from his youth, expressing happiness, which I symbolized with a young lady laughing. Additionally, it portrays the transition into his old age, represented by the image of two hands of an elderly person. Emotions of sadness and solitude are evident and conveyed through the depiction of a young lady looking sad and lost in thought, along with a black and white image of a lady walking upstairs while another person is curled up and appears sad at the bottom of the stairs. This scenario emphasizes the need for support from others. In my grandpa’s case, I made sure I was very present and spend time with him even though I was a child. I represented this with a black lady huging someone in the background. Each element within the collage signifies a particular stage in my grandpa’s life; his age, the house he lived in, etc…

Step 2

  • How did it feel to make art with your hands?

It felt stressful to make art with my hands. Even though I am a creative person, I did not know what to expect from this. I did not know if I would be able to come up with something concrete when all the materials (magazines, markers, tape, glew) were in front of me. I did not know what I was looking for. It was like inventing a puzzle.

  • What was challenging about this process?

A chalenging part about this process was looking for pieces to put together.

  • What was rewarding or satisfying?

What was rewarding was that even though I did not have a vision in my head for what I wanted this to look like, and I did not like the look of it at the beginning, I ended up finding meaning in this piece of work and liking the was abstractness is express through it to tell a story.

  • What did you learn (if anything) about the health issue by doing this?

By doing this exercise, I was able to learn what Parkinson disease was about. It was one thing to live with someone that had it but reading about the symptoms, and being able to connect them with what my grandpa went through, made the disease more tangible and real and allows me to understand and relate those going through the same situation.
