81 Learning Reflection – burnout, stigma, and shame

Burnout, Stigma, and Shame

This week we talked about burnout, stigma, and shame. What stood out to me most was the stigma and shame surrounding medical professionals dealing with mental health disorders. Most doctors feel like they shouldn’t be sick. It is their job to cure and treat sicknesses and their patients’ job to be the ones who are sick. This stigma around doctors not being allowed to be sick in any way causes shame when they do fall ill, especially in mental health areas. Doctors with mental health illnesses can actually be good though, it can help them better understand what some of their patients are experiencing and how to provide the best help for them.
