95 Learning Reflection – Burnout, Stigma and Shame

This week we learned about burnout, stigma and shame through both readings and listening to podcasts about both patients and clinicians lived experiences dealing with these feelings.

Burnout can be hard to both face and admit to others. We live in a culture that encourages a “workaholic” mindset and anything less is shamed and disregarded. People are not robots and need to be able to have days where they are perfect and able to take care of themselves.

Stigma and shame can be a lot more violent than most people realize. Stigma and shame can cause harm intentionally and non-intentionally. Avoidance and alienation against people we deem as “other” can be caused by stigmas. Stigma and shame can also cause self-harm. Examples being not seeking diagnoses or treatments due to fear of the responses you might get from others/how they might view you.
