8 Learning Reflection: Burnout and Shame Stigma

Burnout and Shame Stigma

The idea of burnout in the health and healing community is when a doctor, physician, nurse, etc. deals with feelings of stress that creates an environment that is not healthy for the health worker or the potential patients. Burnout tends to happen because a doctor feels like they are not allowed to take a break, get sick, or feel the way they are feeling. Since physicians are the ones normally taking care of others they do not allow themselves to fall from that position. Many times this occurs in female health workers that do not want to be viewed as weak or locked down upon by their colleges. Burnout can also occur within care providers. When someone is taking care of a relative that is not getting better and they know what is going to eventually happen  this can cause feelings of stress. Learning about all of these instances impacted my view on health professionals and the way society treats them. Normalizing stress and feelings of burnout can be beneficial to health professionals not feeling alone and knowing these experiences are accepted.
