34 Reflections on Learning

I think that reflecting on learning is an important step to truly help you further your understanding of a subject. I find reflecting on learning beneficial because it allows me to to critically think about the information I have learned. A beneficial way for me to reflect on what I have learned has been to either write notes to myself after class about what I learned or tell someone like a friend or family member.

What I know now about the two languages/cultures/epistemologies (biomedical/social science vs humanities). I now know and feel confident about explaining biomedical/ social science vs humanities. Social science is more of a researched way of thinking and more fact based. Humanities is more of a critical-way of thinking it is more visual arts, performance, and story telling and has less emphasis on facts or research. I think the biggest difference is that humanities emphasizes on advocating for people through empathy and understanding. Social sciences emphasizes on predicting and having control as well as striving for objectivity.

Reflection three-What’s memorable about Bill?

I thoroughly enjoyed going to the “Hey Buddy, I’m Bill!” exhibit. I think something I will always remember is the way that people talked about him. Everything I read and everything I heard about Bill during that exhibit was nothing but kind words about Bill and immense appreciation for him. I had never heard about him before coming to Iowa and was really intrigued by his life when we went to the exhibit. I was shocked at how someone who was so kind and full of such innocence could be treated so poorly. The way he was treated at Faribault is in no way right and I am thankful now that our society has put so much pressure on making sure that people who are different and disabled deserve better treatment. Although he was treated poorly so many people around him loved and cared for him just because of the person that he was. He was kind to all and caring, I think that is what I will remember the most.
