These images depict mental health struggles, in this case depression. The loneliness that comes with depression, in the mind or physically, is often a struggle and can affect how one feels and how they interact with others. Self-isolation is often used as a coping mechanism/trauma response for depression and can induce a depressive cycle that is difficult to break. The middle collage followed themes of depression and self-isolation as a means of coping, considering how difficult it is to break a monotonous cycle. In the final collage, I continued to use dark and cool toned colors, this time including more texture and words. I found pieces from magazines relating to how finding peace and comfort in isolation helps someone to cope, but at one point isolation and loneliness begins to eat away at you. I used pieces of tissue through the collage to represent struggle and sadness, and how they pile up in the room around you as your only friend there to wipe away your despair. I also included flower petals as a symbol of something starting off so beautiful but falling apart and dying over time without the proper care. At times, people who find comfort in being alone feel forced into social situations and aren’t able to be fully present. I found that using textures and deeper colors and words/phrases helped me to interpret the collage better.
