Tracks:
- “Victoria’s Secret” by Jax
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9K5IS-inHs
- This song is about how the modeling and clothing industry support body image issues and insecurities . It is also about realizing that what those industries may consider as being overweight is actually normal and considered healthy and that we should love ourselves. Lines such as “Photoshop itty bitty models…told me I was overweight” exemplify the false messages and issues that modeling and clothing companies put onto women.
- “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWASeaYuHZo
- This song is about self and body positivity and loving every unique thing that makes you, you. This song speaks about how the world tries to tell you to change and conform to societal standards but also how we are not alone in our struggles and that we can love ourselves for who we are and not what the world thinks we should be. The line “You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are, And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart” connects to the mental health issue of body positivity/self-positivity by again saying that everyone is beautiful and shouldn’t have to change for anyone.
- “This Is Me” Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman Soundtrack)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjxugyZCfuw
- This song is about rejecting the stigma of being different and accepting yourself for who you are. The song encourages people to be “brave…who [they’re] meant to be. The song also encourages people to “keep marching on to the beat [they] drum” and not be afraid of pleasing everyone else.
- “Born This Way” Lady Gaga
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa7A-E9eIFY
- This song embodies the message that everyone should feel free to be themselves and accept themselves for who they are no matter their differences from others because we are “born [that] way”. This song also works to tell society that they should be accepting of others no matter what the color of their skin is, their sexual orientation, etc.
- “Firework” Katy Perry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSbwHzlcgs8
- This is a song about finding your power in accepting yourself for who you are. This song tells us that we are unique and powerful and shine the brightest when we are just ourselves. This song also encourages people to be true to themselves, letting their colors shine, despite what others may say.
- “Who Says” Selena Gomez
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THhlYyd6hoA
- This is also a song about accepting yourself and recognizing your beauty inside and out. This song empowers people to believe in and accept their beauty and not listen to what other people may say. The song asks people to ignore what society is saying or demanding in order to “fit in” with their standards.
- “Confident” Demi Lovato
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9oumWxQ3C0
- As the title of the song suggests, this song is about being confident in yourself. It is also about using that confidence for self-empowerment and ignoring and rising above those that try to bring us down.
- “The Way I Am” Charlie Puth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNn-MyipwNY
- This song sends a message about how perception of people can often be hurtful, but also incorrect. This song is about accepting oneself and not caring about what others think or say. This song voices that people can either hate you or love you but in the end, believing in yourself and staying true to who you are is the most important thing.
- “ Me Too” Meghan Trainor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCuPCs3DGsw
- This song is about self-love. This song embodies the idea of loving oneself purely for who you are. The singer also talks about the positive emotions that come with being happy with who you are. The singer is so happy with who they are that they don’t want to be and couldn’t imagine being anyone but themself.
- “All About That Bass” Meghan Trainor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6w_4k62uHc
- This is a body positivity song. This song embraces the idea that size doesn’t matter. The song sends a message to people that struggle with accepting their size difference, but it also sends a message to people who bring down people that their behavior is cruel, but can also be overcome.
DJ Statement:
For this project, I decided to focus on the mental health illness of body/self-positivity and acceptance. The tracks above all embody important messages about the mental health issue of body/self-positivity and acceptance by describing one way or another how external factors, often society, pressure people, especially women, into thinking that they are not good enough, don’t have the right body type, etc. The tracks also describe how people should not be afraid to be who they are because they are brave, strong, and beautiful just the way they are. Issues with body and self-positivity plague many people each and every day. Anyone can fall victim to the everyday presence of the expectation to fit into society’s different standards. Issues with body/self-positivity cause both physical and psychological harm, whether it be the development of an eating disorder, depression, anxiety, and potentially even suicide. These songs are targeted towards any and all peoples that have ever had a time where they thought they were not good enough, skinny enough, pretty enough, and so much more. The artists wrote these songs to let people know they are not alone in their struggles and that they are in fact loved, and beautiful, and the right weight. I think these songs also call out society’s shortcomings in supporting all people no matter their looks, weight, differences, races, orientations, etc. These songs aim to point out that society is wrong and should not influence individuality, body size, personality, and more. Listening to these songs can help people heal by realizing they are not alone in their struggle and that there are people out there that understand their struggle. These songs can also help heal by empowering people to be who they are, unashamed and unafraid. These songs may also help those at the cause of the problems by helping them understand how their actions affect others physically and emotionally and in turn heal whatever is causing someone to act out against others that are different from them.
