24 Introduction to Environmental Justice

lchino

What is Environmental Justice?

Environmental Justice, defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, concerning developing, implementing, and enforcing environmental laws, regulations, and policies. It affects everyone, regardless of whether they are aware of it. (LC)
This chapter will explore environmental justice and explain its role at different levels. It will provide an in-depth understanding of the injustices happening to vulnerable populations. These relationships will touch on the burden of pollution, climate change, policies, and more in disproportionately marginalized communities. (LC)
While this topic can be daunting and seem like a negative part of what is happening in the world and our communities, the chapter will also provide tips on how to take steps in the right direction, not only at a personal level but also at a state and federal level. Key initiatives that are being made to create an equitable and sustainable future will be highlighted. (LC)
