60 Personal Reflections

Claire Schaefer

As a public health student and a soon to be Master of Health Administration candidate, I believe understanding the environment we live in is crucial when addressing public health challenges, like those related to environmental factors such as water quality, air pollution, and land use. With cancer rates on the rise in Iowa, as a future health care leader its critical I understand how the environment impacts our health and what policies are put in place to protect our communities on the local, state, national, and global level. This project was transformative as I have gained a much deeper understanding of environmental health issues in Iowa. Our land, water, and air is vital to our health. Moving forward, I will advocate for cleaner agricultural practices in Iowa and support policies that promote a sustainable and healthier approach to environmental protection.

Although public health is not my main area of study in school, it was still significant to learn about environmental regulations in conserving and protecting land. Conservation has always been a subject that has interested me, so it was super cool that I got to learn more about what conservation looks like in terms of environmental regulations. Even if my future career does not include this subject, this project and class taught me skills in researching and simply learning about issues in our world. I look forward to bringing these skills with me as I graduate.

As a Public Health Student, this project was very important and significant to my learning and understanding of environmental regulation and environmental health. Researching the importance and effects of air quality opened my eyes to the absolute necessity for educating others on why our public needs to care about healthy air quality. Moving on from this project, I plan to promote the education and awareness of healthy air quality through sharing academic materials on social media and with family and friends. I plan to engage in community clean-ups and encourage others to join me to do my individual duty of cleaning up our earth and contributing to healthy air quality, which in turn will aid in a healthier future!
