12 Student View and UDOIT
Now, we’ll go over student view and UDOIT. Think of these as ICON proofreaders. Student View makes sure your posts are visible to your students. Meanwhile, UDOIT scans your site for accessibility issues. In both instances, you have to fix these issues manually.
SECTION 1: Student View
Student View is an easy way to make sure course materials, assignments, quizzes, and rubrics are accessible to your students. This way, you can check your work and mitigate confusion if something isn’t where it should be!
Student View lives at the top of your ICON page. Click on the button that says Student View with the glasses icon.
You’ll know when you’re in Student View when you see a magenta border around your screen and the notice at the bottom that says You are currently logged into Student View.
If you look closely, an assignment I made wasn’t published! Now I know to go back and publish it.
To reset Student View and see the course as a brand new student (because you can turn in assignments, etc. as a Test Student), click Reset Student in the bottom right corner. If you’re ready to go back and make changes, click Leave Student View.
Be sure to check your site, and happy ICONing!
SECTION 2: UDOIT
UDOIT is a content accessibility scanner. It can flag accessibility issues in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Files, Pages, Syllabus, and Module URLs.
To start, click on the UDOIT tab in your navigation bar. You’ll see a homepage with a welcome message, a video overview, and a disclaimer. Once you’re finished reading, hit the blue Continue button at the bottom.
You’ll see this page. On the left, you’ll see the errors UDOIT found. Click on the tab with the error.
Tip: Your actual course will likely have many more accessibility hiccups than this test site! There’s no need to panic. In the Ways To Get Started box on the right-hand side, you can filter error types and edit them that way. The By impact type option can help you tailor your site to fit the needs of students with auditory, visual, cognitive or motor disabilities.
When you click on the error or suggestion you’d like to resolve, it’ll take you to the UFIXIT screen, where you can click Review to review each error. Then, you’ll go to the page where the error lies and fix it manually.
Congratulations– you’re one step closer to making your site accessible for all!
