23 Accessibility Requirements at Iowa: WCAG 2.1 AA
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA are recommendations for making accessible web content. The Department of Justice has updated regulations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and now requires all public university digital content to comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
WCAG guidelines are centered on four principles.
- Principle 1 (Perceivable): Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
- Principle 2 (Operable): User interface components and navigation must be operable.
- Principle 3 (Understandable): Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable.
- Principle 4 (Robust): Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.
The WCAG reference guide, How to Meet WCAG (Quick Reference), includes specific and comprehensive guidelines for the three levels of compliance (A, AA, and AAA), organized around the four principles. When checking your own projects, look for guidelines at level AA.
