Bri Brands – Poe, The Gothic, and Pop Culture

In an effort to dive deeper into Poe’s aesthetics, I am interested how this edition of “The Raven” displays the themes of the Gothic we discussed in class, specifically themes of darkness. My annotations will explore that by drawing on themes of darkness in “The Raven” and tying them into other pieces by Poe that also have themes of darkness and elements of the Gothic.

In addition to comparing Poe’s works, I will also explore how the themes he uses in multiple of his pieces have been kept and preserved over time, and how they are displayed in pop culture today. I will do this by pulling a scene from the tv show “Gilmore Girls” and pointing out aspects of Poe’s life, themes of darkness/elements of the Gothic, and how all of those tie into the tv show and compare to the original edition of the work.
