The chapter Opinions: Working at a U.S. embassy in a Russian-speaking country presents summaries of interviews with American and Russian employees of the U.S. embassies in Russia. Originally, the interviews were only conducted in the preliminary brainstorming states of this project and were not recorded. As the project changed its direction towards federal jobs and NGOs in general, the work on the embassy line stopped. We still decided to include the summaries of the interviews because these firsthand accounts offer great insights into preparing for work in a Russian-speaking country. Several recurring themes illustrate the challenges and ways to overcome them: from the critical importance of language proficiency and cultural understanding to the diverse professional responsibilities encompassing visa processing, public affairs management, and media engagement.
