14 Reusing Film Stills and Clips
Online Video Streaming Platforms
Online, public streaming platforms like YouTube and Vimeo cannot grant rights and permissions to the videos in their libraries. Interested users should find publication information associated with the video, like the name of the person or organization who uploaded it, and contact them directly to obtain permissions. Some creators will communicate reuse permissions through the application of a Creative Commons license.
Using Video You Create
If you are recording interviews, be sure that you file a Human Subjects Research Determination form with the Institutional Review Board and receive an exemption or complete a review of your project BEFORE you record.
If you are recording a performance, you must have the consent of all performers to share the video if you plan to post it publicly. Written consent is advisable, since it creates a record of the consent you can refer to at a later date.
