3 Timeline for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing Accommodation Set up
SDS will work as quickly as possible to set up D/deaf and Hard of Hearing Accommodations. For the most accurate and best experience we recommend 3 weeks’ requested notice for accommodations. That timeline includes communication with the instructor, scheduling with potential vendors, providing education to the instructor, and building resources to support accuracy and content specific information for captionists and interpreters.
Students have two options for how communication with instructors is arranged:
- The student sends their Letter of Accommodation(s) to their instructors, and then notifies Student Disability Services of their desire for D/deaf Hard of Hearing Accommodations. If applicable, they communicate which accommodations they would prefer for each class. This option allows a student to connect with an instructor first and introduce themselves.
- The student gives Student Disability Services written permission to reach out to their instructors, either ongoing or on a semester-by-semester basis, before the student has contacted their instructors. The student can then send the Letter of Accommodation early in the semester once they have met their instructor. This option allows Student Disability Services to begin setting up services without the student needing to time their communication with the instructor.
A student may change their preference at any point throughout their time at the University through written notice to sds-deafhoh@uiowa.edu.
