11 Spelling and Capitalization

Spelling

To check the spelling of words for your Pressbook, use an online dictionary like the Merriam-Webster Dictionary or Dictionary.com.

See the appendix chapter titled American Spellings and Word List for reference of common American spellings and abbreviations of words.

 

Capitalization

  • Capitalize:
    • the first letter of a new sentence
    • the pronoun I for first-person writing
    • names and initials
    • titles that precede personal names
    • months of the year and days of the week
    • musical notes and academic grades (A, B, C, etc.)
    • alphabet keys in reference to a computer keyboard
    • abbreviations for file formats
  • Do not capitalize:
    • the first letter of a word after a colon
