Understanding How Mis/Gendering Students Can Affect a Learning Environment

Imagine…

You have a student in your class who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, but you keep slipping up by accidentally using she/her. In some moments, you’ve caught yourself. In others, the student has had to correct you. After some time, you start to notice other students misgendering them, using she/her, or even using gender-exclusive language such as “ladies and gentlemen” and “guys and gals.” The student begins to exhibit anxious and agitated body language one can’t help but notice. You don’t want your student to feel uncomfortable, but you are having difficulty adjusting and unsure what to do next
