Incorporating Sensitive Material Warnings in Learning Environments

Key Words and Definitions

Content warnings: a written or voiced statement that introduces sensitive content (University of Michigan., n.d.).

Trigger warnings: a type of content warning that warns and alerts that material, often shown via video clips, in texts, or during class, may be distressing or cause physiological and psychological symptoms, including for those with anxiety disorders or PTSD (Trigger Warnings, 2021; University of Michigan., n.d).

Flexibility: specified by a willing capacity to accommodate for new, divergent, or shifting requirements (Flexibility, n.d.).

Transparent: providing clarity or availability of information so that it can be easily understood; being free from deception (Transparent, n.d.).
