Examples of putting UDL into action

Seven students, wearing masks are sitting around a long table. They are looking towards something outside the frame.
At the furniture design course (TDSN:4020), students work with sustainable materials and methods.

Before we dive into the examples, take a moment to think of some ways you are already supporting diverse learners in your courses. What strategies have been working well to create accessible and welcoming learning environments?  What are some additional ways similar principles could be leveraged in your teaching?

This chapter will provide examples of practical strategies instructors can use to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in their courses. For example, it will discuss adapting office hours, building accommodations into the course design for all learners, crafting syllabus accessibility statements, and learning students’ names.

This is a living document, and we will add more chapters with concrete examples as we engage in this work. Want to discuss a specific teaching topic? Contact us at teaching@uiowa.edu.
