Belonging and student engagement

Students working on problems in a financial management class in a lecture hall in the Pappajohn Business Building.

According to 2018 Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) data, students face common obstacles to their academic success: Approximately one in four students do not feel comfortable asking for help with coursework, face difficulty speaking up in class, and/or are concerned about being judged negatively by other students. These challenges connect to aspects of belonging and have likely worsened throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

This section will discuss evidence-based strategies for creating a sense of belonging, community guidelines, active learning and student engagement, and metacognitive awareness. This section prompts your reflection on how you might create or contribute to an inclusive learning environment where everyone feels able to participate.
