Unit 2: [Knowing things through] Academic (and Communication) Research

[Knowing things through] Academic (and Communication) Research

How are Academic and Scholarly ways of knowing things Different from Common ways?

I mean… this course is about research methods…AND it’s taught at a university… so, spoiler alert, we’re going to talk about how scientific ways of knowing are superior to everyday ways. Caught ya by surprise that one, didn’t it? But don’t worry – I’m not going to pretend that we don’t have our issues in academia. Thus, we’re also going to talk about the problems with scientific ways of knowing. We’re going to narrow to talk about research more specifically, and then communication research.

II. Unit 2: [Knowing things through] Academic (and Communication) Research

5. Scientific Ways of Knowing

6. Problems with Scientific Ways of Knowing

7. Other ways of knowing…. Research

8. What is Communication Research?

We’re going to cover some pretty complicated concepts in this course. I recommend that you watch this video at the outset of each unit, and think about the major concepts and how they related to the content of each unit. Each unit has an entire chapter dedicated to the concepts described in this video. You will only be tested on the concepts when they are included in a chapter. Re-watching this video allows you to think about how the concepts all fit together.
