The congiuntivo (subjunctive mood) is mainly used in secondary clauses, after verbs expressing personal opinions, doubts, emotions and desire, such as penso che, credo che, dubito che, preferisco che, spero che, voglio che. These constructions are used when the subject of the verb in the main clause (subject1) and the subject of the verb in the secondary clause (subject2) are different.

• • Voglio che i ragazzi vadano a Roma domani. [Since the subject of voglio (subject1: io) and the subject of vadano (subject 2: i ragazzi) are different, the congiuntivo is used in this construction.]

Costruzioni con l’infinito

When the subject of the verb in the main clause (subject1) is the same as the subject of the verb in the secondary clause (subject2) (in other words, when we think/wish/want… to do something ourselves), a construction with the infinito (infinitive) is used instead of the congiuntivo.

• • Voglio andare a Roma domani. [Since the subject of voglio (subject1: io) is the same as the understood subject of andare (subject 2: io), the infinito is used in this construction.]

1. The verbs desiderare, preferire, and volere are just followed by the infinitive.
   • Preferisco tornare a casa presto.
   • Voglio uscire stasera.

2. Many verbs are followed by di + infinitive (see Costruzioni con l’infinito).
   • Penso di uscire stasera.
   • Dubito di riuscire a finire i compiti.
   • Non credo di potere venire al bar con voi.
   • Spero di andare in Grecia questa estate.
