Il congiuntivo imperfetto
The congiuntivo imperfetto (imperfect subjunctive) of regular verbs is formed by:
- – dropping the –re of the infinitive;
- – adding the following endings to verbs of all conjugations.

- Essere (to be), dare (to give), and stare (to stay) have irregular stems.

Uso del congiuntivo imperfetto
The congiuntivo imperfetto is mainly used after verbs that convey uncertainty and are in any past tense (passato prossimo, imperfetto, passato remoto) or the condizionale (conditional).

- Pensavo che voi partiste domani. (I thought you were leaving tomorrow.)
- Speravo che avesse ragione. (I hoped he was right.)
- Vorrei che tu fossi qui. (I wish you were here.)
The expressions come se (as if) and magari (if only) are always followed by the congiuntivo imperfetto or the congiuntivo trapassato.

- Si comportano come se fossero bambini. (They act as if they were children.)
- Magari avessimo venti anni! (If only we were twenty years old!)
