I nomi femminili

In Italian, feminine nouns are formed according to the following rules.

1. -o/e –> -a. Most feminine nouns are formed by replacing the masculine ending (-o/-e) with -a. 
   

   maschile	femminile	maschile --> femminile
   -o	-a	amico --> amica ragazzo --> ragazza
   -e	-a	cameriere (waiter) --> cameriera signore --> signora

2. -e. Some nouns ending in -e can be either masculine or feminine.
   

   maschile	femminile	maschile --> femminile
   -e	-e	il cantante --> la cantante (singer) il nipote (grandson / nephew) --> la nipote (granddaughter / niece)

3. -o/-e/-a –> -essa. Some nouns indicating a title or profession use the ending -essa for the feminine.
   

   maschile	femminile	maschile --> femminile
   -e	-essa	dottore --> dottoressa poeta --> poetessa principe (prince) --> principessa (princess) professore --> professoressa studente --> studentessa

4. -tore –> -trice. Most nouns ending in -tore in the masculine change to -trice in the feminine.
   

   maschile	femminile	maschile --> femminile
   -tore	-trice	attore (actor) --> attrice (actress) pittore --> pittrice (painter) scrittore --> scrittrice (writer) scultore --> scultrice (sculptor)

5. -ga and -ista. Nouns ending in -ga and –ista can be either masculine or feminine. In the plural, nouns ending in -ga have two forms: -ghi (masculine) and -ghe (feminine). Nouns ending in -ista also have two forms in the plural: -isti (masculine) and -iste (feminine).

   singolare	-ga	-ga	il collega --> la collega (colleague)
   plurale	-ghi	-ghe	i colleghi --> le colleghe
   singolare	-ista	-ista	l’artista --> l’artista il turista --> la turista
   plurale	-isti	-iste	gli artisti --> le artiste i turisti --> le turiste

6. Different forms. Some nouns have completely different forms for the masculine and the feminine.

   padre (father)	madre (mother)
   uomo (man) (pl. uomini)	donna (woman)
   re (king)	regina (queen)
