The mission of Campus Safety is to foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive campus environment by building partnerships, solving problems, and working collaboratively to reduce crime, preserve peace, and provide safety services equally to all members of the community.

Departments

The organization includes eight departments that are committed to all facets of campus safety, including: the UI Police Department, Security Services, Emergency Management, the Threat Assessment Team, Security Engineering Services, the Office of Clery Compliance, Emergency Communications, and Fire Safety.

Safety Resources

Campus Safety is here for you whether you need to report a crime, need a safe way to get home, or are locked out of your vehicle, room, or apartment. The office also operates several free safety services for students and employees including:

  • Hawk Alert is one facet of the campus emergency notification system. Hawk Alerts are sent via text message, phone call, and email when there is confirmation of an immediate threat to the health and safety of the UI community. Text message is the fastest way to receive an alert; additional alert preferences can be updated in MyUI.
  • Crime Alerts are used to notify campus of certain crimes that have already occurred but could pose an ongoing safety issue. These messages are sent out via email.
  • NITE RIDE is a free late night transportation service for all university students, faculty, and staff. The service operates from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and express rides are available for $1. Bookmark this link to request a safe ride home: niteride.its.uiowa.edu.
  • Rave Guardian, a free mobile app, allows students to set a safety timer for their walk home, text anonymous crime tips to UI police, and call UI police using a panic button. Sign up using your UI email address for access to the campus network.
  • Bike Registration via Bike Index.
  • Safety Training on several topics including personal safety, self-defense, violent incident survival, American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED training, and more.

What Current Students are Saying

  • “Use the Nite Ride app for late nights where you don’t want to walk home – it is free to use or students can pay $1 to be dropped off directly at their home.”
